Why Skate Shoes Wear Out So Fast

If you're reading this, clearly you already know how fast a pair of shoes can go from brand new, to riddled with holes in a matter of weeks.
The truth is, there are a TON of great skate shoes to choose from – high quality suede, reinforced high-wear areas, good board feel – my personal go-to has been the Nike Janoski's for years. I love the look, comfort, vulcanized sole…they're amazing.
So why do they, and all skate shoes for that matter, wear out so fast?
It's skateboarding's nature; it creates concentrated wear. On the side from ollies, toe cap from kickflips, the laces. Quite literally taking sandpaper to your shoes and sanding them over and over again, thousands of times!
Suede helps, double stitching helps, reinforced construction helps…but they don't eliminate wear, they can only slow it down.
So, instead of asking what are the most durable shoes, a better question might be – how do I find a pair of shoes I love, and then get more life out of them?
With a shoe that's already broken in and you're comfortable with, there are easy repairs! Patch a hole with TrickTape, just as you would patch anything with a regular piece of duct tape. Same goes for the laces, the toe…if you've used shoe goo in the past, you can even use it around the toe edges for extra durability.

You can repair existing holes or even protect your shoes by patching them before they start ripping.
The goal isn't finding an indestructible skateboard shoe – the goal is getting more life out of the shoes you already love.
